Infrequent towing and hauling with mostly around town trips.......three valve 5.4 is the best bet. The three valve V-10 is a torque monster but it's worse on gas than the old carbureted 460 engines.

I have a 3 valve 5.4 in my 05 7200 LB GVW F150 4X4 4 door. I love it. I had to go to South Dakota to pick up my son and his car the middle of summer. I get 18 MPG with no trailer, 17 MPG with empty trailer and 15 MPG with car on trailer, all with the A/C on. On the trip I found out just how much difference the 3 valve engine had over the 2 valve. I got into a situation that I could not avoid and I can tell you fron experiance that the 3 valve engine will run at 95 MPH towing a trailer with a car on it without a problem. Go with the F150 with the 5.4. Also I have not had to put one penny into this truck sence I bought it in Aug of 05. Just the normal oil and filter changes.

I have pulled with the 4.6, 5.4 and the V10. My opinion is the 4.6 is a dog pulling (didnt like the feel in small Tenn. hills), the 5.4 is fine (much better in the hills). Now the V10, dont even know you are pulling anything even up and over 11,000 foot mountain passes.....but it likes gas I get 13-14 mpg, pulling or not pulling!!

No way in hell a 4.6 pulls as good as a 5.4. I've driven two 4.6 F150's and a 4.6 Expedition. Compared to the 5.4, they were sluggish and revved through the roof it seemed. I would about compare the 4.6 Expedition to pulling with the 4.2 V6/5 speed '02 F150 we had (takeing off on a hill with a V6 and 5 speed really sucks pulling a trailer with a car on it  ). Takeing off from a redlight with a 5.4, you don't even know you've got another car and trailer back there. On the interstate, set the cruise control and forget about it. I would definately get a 5.4 over a 4.6.

As for which is best truck to get, FORD... :) Chevy's may ride better, but I want a truck to be a truck, not a no-feel-of-the-road luxury car.

I have an 03 6.0 Superduty 250 LWB extended cab and 4wd. One of the biggest problems with the 6.0 was the injectors, which were redesigned and installed on all engines assembled after 3/11/03. Mine was built 3/09/03. SO far I have not had any problems with mine. Just got back from a 2700 mile trip to FL pulling my 22 ft inclosed trailer loaded with my Sprint and Harley. I got right at 11.5 mpg. It might do a little better but I like running 75-80 mph. At a little over 27000 miles so far, its been a great truck.
