Not to hijack your thread but I recently purchased a new welder and am extremely happy with it....it's a Miller Syncrowave 200, TIG welder......makes for some EXCELLENT beads!!

Man, that is a BEAUTIFUL bead...

What exactly is a TIG? I have heard all the different names thrown around, but don't know TIG. Is it gas assisted? I ask because if I added gas to my wirefeed "MIG" and it looked like that, I would definetly start buying bottles.

Your welder is WAY uptown compared to mine.

But, again, I paid $115 for mine.

I did go a little out and buy one of those newfangled auto darkening hood...

gas mig will look somewhat like that depending on the welders skill and material being welded. mine usually start to look like that about the time i am finishing up the project. dont get enough practice, and sometimes its 6 months between welding jobs.

Yeah, I let my hair go... :D

I used to be able to get a weld looking like that with an arc welder on stainless, but with this wirefeed, it spits and spatters and needs to be ground down to a decent looking weld afterwards. I just weld until there is too much material laid down, then grind it down to a nice looking bead.

But, that is only if it is a visible weld, like on the top of my shock tower cuts. Underneath, I just knocked the slag off and paint over it.

I am going out daily and just tinkering with the welder settings and materials being welded on, and using the spray, just trying to get a nice looking weld with the cheap MIG.

TIG welding (also known as GMAW or Heliarc) is very similar to gas (acetylene)sp welding, except it uses electricity to create the heat instead of gas. It's an expensive way to weld but it makes for the best looking, strongest beads of any form of welding. Also, you can basically weld anything with it....aluminum, stainless, titanium, copper, bronze, etc...

oops....TIG is GTAW and MIG is GMAW.......or "Gas Tungsten Arc Welding" vs. "Gas Metal Arc Welding"

Or to make it even more confusing TIG = Tungsten Inert Gas vs. MIG = Metal Inert Gas.

You will get much better welds on your MIG machine if you switch it over to gas.

I bought some at Home Depot, but it is kinda thin. I'm not cuting anything out i'm going to weld it to the facing on the inside, of the rear foot area.

Comet GT1974 is right, I added gas to my Lincoln 100 HD and what a difference.

I am not sure if I can add gas to this welder, it is too cheap...

Unless someone knows a way to do it. It has the larger 1" diameter plastic hose surrounding the wire feed unit, so maybe I can rig up gas to feed into it?

If not, I will use this for a while until I burn it up then buy a Lincoln that will accept gas. As cheap as this one is, I will be amazed if it lasts more than a year.

Also, what is "23 wire"? I may PM you in case you don't read this often.
