Hey guys I'm looking to put some headers on my Comet. I've already searched headers and found dozens of pages that were long and drawn out. I just want to know what headers will fit my car, not trying to get super expensive or crazy since its not a really powerful car.

    I have:
    302
    C4
    Manual brakes
    power steering
column shifter (changing to floor at the same time as headers)

Please include part numbers or links if possible!

Would rather ask you guys first because the part store guys are morons

    Thanks!

My experience is with Hooker 6901s but I removed the power steering. There is a drop down bracket for use with headers and power steering but I don't know that number. The only way to install the headers is from below, one side at a time.

I would like to keep my power steering, wasn't sure if there are a set of shorties that would work or something

ive delt with the hooker 6901s, the headman headers and the thorley shortys. none are perfect.
the hookers and headmans are both long tube headers of a very similar design. the hookers are better than the headmans. they have better port shapes and thicker flanges. both require the drop down bracket for power steering.
the throleys suck on how the drivers side dump is too close to the pitman arm. they really need redesign these. the passenger side points towards the floor board a bit. its not a problem but could have been better.

I'm with Bryant all the way in regards to the Thorley's fit. Absolutely horrible design to the point that you'd think they just re-numbered another models design and called it a Maverick header. And that's one of the absolute worst places to have to skew a transitional angle and neck down an already too short collector just to clear the pitman arm. Plus.. I use headers for maximum performance gains in the first place.. and admittedly will never be a fan of shorty designs. It's been proven many times that they give up nearly half the potential gain over a set of properly sized long tubes. But.. your dollar.. your bang.

Many of us have the Doug Thorley shortys and LOVE them. Just do a search on the subject.

Summit sells long tube headers that fit with the steering box, but you have to buy the power steering drop down bracket and use it to replace the current bracket. If they're going on a V8 it is a tight fit. I had to dent one of the tubes a little on the passenger side. You generally have to jack the car up pretty high and unbolt one motor mount lift the engine a few inches. Rebolt the motor mount and repeat for the other side. Its not for the faint of heart lol..:rofl2:

X2 in my opinion the best fitting off the shelf long tube headers for our mavericks/comets... but I have manual steering...

They fit way better than the Hookers, and always have, it's just that people don't want to listen, I ran Hedamans for years on my 74 Grabbers. You'll just need a drop bracket for the steering ram.

I think I'm going to go with the hedman 88400 shorties based on what I've read. No drop bar is required and fits close to the block.

    Anyone not recommend them?

I have used them. I found the Doug Thorley's fit better.

I did a thread about the Hedman's on here somewhere.

I looked at them but i don't want to spend nearly $500 for them, summit has the others for $179 so if they'll do the job I'm going to go with that
