the headers i have are the summit G9031. they say they fit mustangs, comets, fairlanes among others and also 1970-1974 mavericks. at the track last weekend i was told the reason they don't fit is that i have the large bellhousing (164 tooth). does everyone that is not having any problems have the small bellhousing (157 tooth). i haven't tried the new hooker competition headers. they came yesterday and i looked at them this morning. they sure look nice with the ceramic metallic coating. i don't want to bang them up putting them in. i have a 157 flexplate and a newly rebuilt tranny to put in but i'll need to change the convertor to the 10 1/2 in. pattern. about $400.:)

    The trans isn't the problem.

The trouble with the summit ones is they will come to rest on your steering box.
The hooker ones won't give you much trouble on the way in, but if you want to keep them pretty you should (and so should I) come up with a way to adjust the steering stop to keep the pitman arm from hitting the header when you turn left.
Good luck and if you come up with something please let me know what it was.

    CometGt,

Can you update us on the fitting of the headers?

What was required to make them fit (IF they fit at all)?

Any other niformation would be great as I DO NOT want to run 1-5/8" headers. In fact, I'm in a que at a job shop to have 1-3/4" primary custom headers made (yes, expensive as hell :( )

Look forward to your reply and Thanks,

    Rick

finally got the engine back in the mav. had a friend come over yesterday (1 1/2 hour drive) to see why the engine wasn't turning over. seems the piston dome ws hitting the head where the spark plugs go in. new edelbrock heads. after grinding away (seems like i put the heads on and off 20 times) while taking a little off at a timethey were ready to go on. i dreaded getting to the headers. i got the hooker comp #6901-1. with the engine still up about 2 inches we tried them from the bottom. i couldn,t believe it they wen't in with no problems. perfect fit. this is a strip only car with no p/s or shock modifications. haqvent tried the turning yet, but the installation was a snap. made my day.
