Some folks collect redline Hot Wheels like other people collect coins ... condition is everything. There is a big market for these with guys in their late 40s, because they were around at the perfect age when these came out in 1968.

That car has a small chip on the rear wheelwell. That can devalue it by half. For that reason, I would say he might have a hard time selling it for the asking price, but $300-400 should be easy.

Certain colors on certain body styles are rare and that drives price on these, too. Pink is almost always tough because no self-respecting boy (or parents) in the 1960s would bear the thought of playing with a pink toy. However, many of the Mattel sales reps carried them in their samples because, in person, they are spectacular. The first four years, these cars were candy paint shot over polished metal and they look more like jewelry than toys. Candy pink has blue undertones to it. They really are something to see.

In 1973, Mattel almost stopped making Hot Wheels. Sales dropped and they went on extensive cost-cutting, including drab enamel paint and no more moving hoods, etc.

I have a pretty extensive collection of redlines (1968-1972), but I just wanted them back around. As long as they are fairly presentable, I never needed them to be perfect originals. I could never justify spending the $$$s that some folks do. I doubt that I have spent more than $30 on a car more than a handful of times.

Getting ready to sell off some more of mine, because the Comet has been going through cash like a sailor on shore leave.

I have something like 27 or 28 Mighty Mavericks/Street Snorters ... ranging from junk to some pretty nice ones ... 14 of them on display.

This was the Hot Wheels casting that brought me back into "the redline sickness" since it was the closest thing they ever made to my Comet.

I do have an original Pink MM that I rescued from under a thick layer of black kiddie paint. It is actually in nice shape yet. The kid probably got teased by his buddies and the thick slobber of paint acted as a preservative ... :thumbs2:
