I want to replace my D5DE-CA 1 bbl Carter/Motorcraft Carb w/ electric assist heat choke with a new electric choke style carb. Does anyone have a good recommendation. I've been reading that Autolites may be a good choice over stock units and that the inefficient log manifold design will always been an issue that a carb alone will never solve. But if I buy new, I want to get the best carb choice for a virtually bone stock engine setup. I believe I at least need to stay with a 1 bbl setup but with an upgrade to an electric choke. Where do I go from here?
Wow, too much info to process as I read about carb choices. Some say 2v is better than 1v, others say no. I don't want to replace what's already installed with the same thing if there is a better choice that I can afford. The Vaporizer 1v looks great but expen$ive and you need to change out your distributed. No thanks. Still reading but not inspired yet. Might just go with a pep boys special soon...
For now, my goal is to get as comfortable as possible with the stock six-banger, since I don't have a lot of money to invest right now. I'm thinking that a better-than-factory replacement would be key right now, until I'm able do decide on what direction I wanna go in the future. I'll read that article you sent me, I haven't seen that one yet. Thanks!
http://www.classicinlines.com/Home.asp I have been reading on this web sight and am looking into doing http://www.classicinlines.com/LogMods.asp#2VC this conversion on my 71 maverick Grabber. I am also looking into more info on what I should do.
My head is at the machinist now. My friend milled, bored and welded the head for the direct two barrell mount. I got the mount and followed the instruction from Classic Inlines. I am milling, porting and adding large valve to the head. Along with a 274 cam, double roller timing chain and single out headers. The block is bored 30 over with stock parts as far as I know. Should be a good improvement. Rick
Keep me informed as you go, I am thinking of doing this to my 71 Mav With a 200. What engine do yuou have? What partnumber is the head? I have one from I think a 78 or 79 Farmont. it is a D8 part #. Can you send me a copy of the instructions on the milling/boring of the head, I work with a few machinists. Later, Joel
