hey, I purchased a 71 302 for my 70 mav. I have the frame stands coming from crites. I have the motor mounts and the headers. I have a few questions about some other things. (1) what fan, pully system and brackets can I use on the 302 to match the 302 for the altinator and power steering? (2) can I use the 6's throttle linkage?, (3) what electronic igition is the easiest and best to use to convert from the points with a budgit in mind? any help would be appreciated. thanks!
yes, please help. pics would be great and info on whch parts to get and parts that can be used from the 6 (throttle linkage,etc..) would be great. thanks c.b.
Hey, I was also thinking of converting to a 302. It is from my 72 ford f100. I rebuilt it and put a nice cam in it. I don’t have anything but the motors. I was thinking of dropping my I6 in the truck. Should I replace the rear end too and would my I6 bolt up to the trucks 3 speed tranny. And would my I6 tranny work for my 302????? Thanks, Robert
i got a 302 out of a f-100 as well.. it was a 75... but i also got a c-4 tranny and put it in as well. do you have a 3 speed in the maverick or a c-4? and you shouldnt need to replace the rear end. but it depends on how much power you are going to have also.. you will need frame mounts for the 302 to go into your maverick.. and then you will need 302 engine mount insulators. headers etc but im not sure about the bellhousing
I think it is a c4 3 speed. I know for sure it is a 3 speed that is on the truck. I want to put a manual in the comet but right now im thinking ill just wait and when I get some money ill just go ahead and drop a crate in there with a good rear end and a really nice c4.
Im not sure what tranny I have in the comet. It is an auto and the tranny is pretty big. It’s not near the size as my 3 speed in the truck but then again I haven’t taken out my tranny on the car. What usually comes stock in the rear and tranny with a 76 comet I6?
look on your door tag on the comet.. it will give you a code for the rear end.. or you can crawl under the car and look and see the tag on the rear end i am guessing that the 302 will mount right up the auto tranny.. unless there is a bellhousing difference
If they are both Automatic 3 speeds... the one in your Comet/maverick is a C4 and the one in your truck is a C6 most likely... If the 3 speed in the truck is bigger than then C4 in your car... then it is a C6. Also check to see if the bellhousing on the truck transmission is made into the case, or seperate. C6s dont bolt onto the transmission, they are made on. C4s were offered in fullsize trucks, but only in the F-100 models, not the F-150. Im not sure about the I6 bolting to your C6 but I think they may be the same, but do not quote me on it.
Ok well my tranny for the truck bolts onto the bell housing because I have rebuilt this engine and completely took out the tranny and engine together. The tranny off of the bell housing looks really small. I have not taken out my I6. But the tranny looks pretty big when I got up under the car to check the fuel lines before I bought it. I didn’t really pay attention to the engine and tranny because they didn’t leak. So why look you know.... had no other problems. But yeah I don’t know the gears that are in the car. And im not sure if it is C4. It is an automatic. The truck has a 3 on the tree. Would the vin on the car say? And would there be a different place for the vin mine is kind of hard to see from the weather..... I think my title has it on there but I haven’t looked I will look in a few min once I can get back in the other room.... Thanks
ok for the last time guys i guess i didnt explain well.... the truck is a 1972 ford f-100 with a 302 3 speed on the column. (manual). my car is a 1976 mercury Comet with a I6 (dont know the cc's) shifter in the column. (automatic). trying to swap the engines. but might just not do it at all just wait till i enough money and buy a crate motor and do the whole car... drap it up...
If your I-6 is a 250, it has the same bell housing bolt pattern as the 302. If its a 200, your a bit outta luck as far as the engine swap, you'll need at least a different bell housing for the c4, but the I-6's tranny won't live long behind a v8. The trucks 3 speed may or my not be easy to find a bell housing for, depending on whether a toploader bell from a 200 bolts up. Hope its a 250, it makes life easy, except for finding a neutral balance flywheel for the 250 for a good price.
if your comet has its original automatic tranny in it it should be a C4. like slant said, if you have a 250 I6 your current tranny will match up to a 302. if your engine is a 200 or something smaller the tranny wont fit. if you plan on making any serious power you should upgrade the trans anyway. swapping over to a manual is a whole diffrent can of worms. i think the vin will either say its an I6 or V8, it wont tell you the cubic inches of it, just how many cylinders. going to a v8 you will also need a new throttle linkage but there are also aftermarket sources for that too. as far as elactronic ignigtion i would go to the junkyard and pull what you need out of a late 70's early 80's 302 powered ford if you wanted to go the cheapest route, if not the aftermarket can provide you with all that as well. i think on v8 mavs there is also a crossmember that goes between the shock towers under the oil pan thats not on i6 cars, to help suspend the extra weight. v8 mavs also have a tranny crossmember to allow for dual exhaust not found on i6 cars.
