I took out the bolts but it still won't come off. I can pry on it and it will give a little but that's it. Am I supposed to take the little clip that is around the steering shaft in front of the bearing that you can see in my picture? Or am I just trying to pull it off wrong?
OOPS, I forgot about the clip... Sorry about that... When I first got the Comet I took the column apart to replace lower collar, it went back together without issue...
For something that is suppose to be so easy to do this has turned into a real pia, are you sure you got the correct replacement part ? There are 2 different types one has a triangle at the base and the other is a rectangle but I would think if it was the wrong one it would not fit all the way in
Correct, two styles. Additionally, the reproduction lock cylinders do not fit, or work, as well as the originals.
Notice the size of the "pin" and "tongue" is smaller on the 70-73 tumbler than the 74-77 tumbler (on the right). The tumbler wasn't the only thing that changed. Notice the cut-out for the 4-way flasher.
It's the right part. I can stick a screwdriver in where the tongue of the key goes and I can only turn the same amount as when the key is in there. I got the clip out and it still doesn't want to come off... do I have to pull off the little ring behind the clip of is it just being a pain? Also I noticed that since everything on the column is lose I can feel that the key lock assembly catching on some thing inside of there...
Not sure about the floor shift column but the auto column I had has a bolt that secures the collar to the shift tube. took me a minute to figure this one out at the time.
I have finally given up on this steering column. Does anyone know where I can get another one? Non-column shift, does not have to have turn signal or wiring, preferably black but not necessary since I can paint it, fits model 1973. Thanks
And it would be nice if it already had the lock assembly inside of it. I don't care about the key since I have a new one to put in it. From where I am standing it seems to be fairly easy to put a new column in the car. If anyone has done it before let me know how hard/easy it was. Thanks
Can I use an auto column aND take off the shifter parts that I can get to without taking it completely apart. Of course the other option is to fix the one in it but I am genuinely stuck on it.
The way I see it is you wouldn't have to swap parts... just take some off the auto column so they don't get in the way.
