I just got my Mav back on the road after 9 or 10 months doing little upgrades, whole new exhaust w/headers and dumped right behind the flows. Since I have all that xtra space on both sides of my stock fuel tank I want to install the largest tank that will fit there without causing clearence problems. I searched the forums to see if this has been discussed, but it seems a installing a larger tank is an unpopular swap as the only results I found were about swapping to a smaller tank for exhaust clearence. This is for my 73 Maverick 4 dr 302 Mike
Swap in a larger fuel tank from a big bumper car. Some one on the board did this not long ago. More capacity, and pretty easy. According to Chilton's the 76 models were 19.2 gals. -Corbin
I agree with Corbin, go with a later model Maverick/Comet gas tank. I like the idea of the larger capacity tank myself.
mike, i did the larger tank swap. it was a breeze. be sure you get the straps and the sending unit. i also got the filler neck, it has the no can steal gas door in it..... any ????? just ask...frank...:bananaman
You can also do the Mustang tank mod and use the 69-70 tank which gives you a larger tank and exhaust clearence.
Tank Swap Cool, Thanks for all the replies. Looks like I have a good excuse to gather up some tools and go junkyard fishing my favorite passtime!! Will any other model cars (besides Mustang) tanks fit my 73 Mav or just later Mavs? Grenada? Mike
One nice thing about the later model Mavericks, is the fact that you can still buy them, unlike the early models which have been discontinued. Not sure about the Grenada tanks.
Autokrafters sells the sending units, I am not 100% sure who sells the tanks, but I know they are still available. I am sure someone else here will be able to help you with that information. Autokrafters may even sale those as well, but I am not sure.
I know I can still get the tank at my local Canadian Tire, but that might be a little difficult for ya
I have a brand new tank still in the box...never been opened and its for sale if you or anyone else is interested...unfortunatly I live in Canada...
