I am converting a 74 over to small bumpers, I have most everything but , I need a new grill, which one will work and will I need different trim rings, for a different grill. Will a 72 grabber grill work if so can i use the 74 trim rings,
All the Maverick grills are the same and will easily swap from one car to another. You just have to wire up the grill lights if you dont already have them. I'm not sure what trim rings your talking about. If your talking about the grill light doors, then there are 2 different mounting types. But again, they are easily adaptable to use either.
dennis, is right in theory but m.a.v., earl and i have found out that over the years the grilles want to buck and bow. one side will fit and the other has to be massaged a little. i have a perfict grille with lights and wires. it is chrome. if you would like it p.m. me and we can talk. on the trim,if you are talking about the headlight trim it is the same...frank...
I think the brace behide the grill is differant between the small and big bumpers. the 70-72 brace is part#D0DZ-16747A and the 74-77 part #is D4DZ-16747A So there is a change in there somewhere. I know when I did my swap on my 74 I had to change this bracket also. I still use my 74 grill though. Russ
Are you talking about the center brace that the hood catch also bolts to? If so, the only difference is the lower section. The small bumper has a valance panel and stone guard which this brace also supports in the center. The big bumper did not have these so there is no support section on the lower half of the brace. So you will need this brace to convert to small bumpers. You can just fabricate a bracket to support the center of the valance and stone guard, and attach it to lower section of the grill brace.
When I switched to small bumpers I used my stock 76 grille. The center brace had broken off years earlier when a chain broke while installing an engine. In my opinion the grille is so light that it does not need the center support. Mine has not used one since about 1979 and no problems here. Dan
