Congrats... but keep a close eye on the Viva's. Nothing but bad reviews online for that line as its a Walmart cheapy line of Goodyears. Just thought I better give you a heads up Was going to buy some for my daily driver till I read all the reviews.
Back to the original wheels I ordered, the local Essex store (a wholesale outlet) has 3 of the all aluminum Cragars like I originally ordered for $80 each 15"x7" 5/4.5. I looked at them and really thought about buying them, but after seeing them in person I like mine better. I've owned Cragars before and always hated the shoulder lugnuts. These use conical lugnuts which is really nice.
Too much info on wheel size and tires Guys, I am responding to this post because there are a number of you who have working knowledge of good wheel sizes, offset, etc for the Comet and Mav. I am restoring a 71 Comet GT, ready for the paint shop and I want to buy wheels & tires. After reading many of the threads on this site, all the info leaves me a bit overwhelmed. At first, I was going to get 15" wheels, then I read about those guys putting 17" and even 18" wheels on. Yeah, I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder and they look good, but what is wrong with a factory look? So I think I will look at 15" wheels again, especially 'vintage type' Torq Thrusts or Cragars. No, I do not want to use a spacer or have to roll the lips. No, I don't want to have to use air shocks to jack it up and make it look.... well, you figure it out. No, I don't want the tires to rub frame or fender, so I will be reasonable on tire size. I used two parts cars to make this third GT, so these cars are getting fewer and far between. They looked good then and lets make them look good and original now. I know I want 15" rims, 7" wide on the front and 8" wide on the rear. All must have around a 3 1/2 offset so they won't rub. Now, what size tires should I run so the car can stand tall and there not be space between the fender well and tire, and the tire does not rub? What do you know that works for sure?
Rev Ron, I have 15" X 7" Cragar SS's all around with 215-60's in the front and 255-60's in the rear. I have no issues with clearance and I have had this setup for about 10 years. They fill the wheelwells nicely with no issues. Good Luck, Lee "THE MAV" Richart
I had posted earlier that I had 255s on my Mustang but after thinking about it, I think they were 245s. I think I'm going with 245s on my Mavericks rear.
