I need a starter that goes with a T5 trans. I have a 28oz 157 tooth flywheel. I was told to get the factory 1992 5.0 Mustang starter. But when I looked up the engine compression, it was 9.0:1. I'm planning to run about 9.7:1 - 10.0:1 compression, does this make a difference? What are some good staters? I looked it up on Summit & came up with a MSD for $500. Anyone got any for less than that?
Will a 95 fit my setup? Do the 95 come with a 157 tooth flywheel, if so I think it would work? I think the teeth on the flywheel makes a difference.
i belive the 92 mustang starter is the same as the 95. that starter is a high torque one that is also lighter than the older style starter. ive used it on lots of projects. the trick is to wire it a little different than the older style one. the new style starter has two connectionions on it. i will put the main cable that goes from the big lug on the starter to the lug on the solonid that the bat cable is going to. then i take a 10 gage wire and put that on the other big lug on the soloniod and run it to the tab on the starter. this is how ford wires these starters. the first one i installed i had just put a jumper wire on the big lug on the starter to the tab and left the solonoid wired up like stock. the starter would run on for about 1 to 2 seconds before disengageing when you released the key
I will try to get one after Christmas. I may have to PM you to get a little more details on how to get it wired.
I agree .... as Bryant said !!! i just went to L K Q pick and pull used parts in clearwater and for $8.49 (half off sale this weekend) I found a 94 f-150 with a 5.0 and it had the factory high torque mini starter. I installed it in about 10 minutes and it works perfect !!! I've had a hot starting problem forever and now it seems to be gone !!! plus I saved about a lot of wieght.
I went looking for a 5 spd mustang & the starters are all gone. I didn't know is it is interchangeable with any other cars or trucks.
IIRC, 5.0 and 5.8 Ford trucks use the same starter. Had one on my old Maverick (302 c4) that I pulled from a '94 F150 5.0 auto. It was the big gear reduction unit.
i belive ford went to that style of starter on all 5.0s and 5.8s after 92. so trucks, vans, lincons, and mercurys with those motors should be good canidates
