I need an Evaporator for the A/C in my 1973 Grabber. The A/C place said not to buy a used one, but to get a part number for a new one. Does anyone have any ideas for a new A/C evaporator that will fit into my car?

Thanks. I was hoping to get something less expensive, but that may be all there is.

I use to work for Classic Auto Air and I can tell you that its ok to use a used one. ford evaps hardly ever leaked when I pressure checked them. I personally wouldnt spent that kind of money on a new one.

I just took three factory Maverick ones that appeared to be in good shape (along with several junk radiators) to Blaze a few weeks ago. Didn't think they were useable/worth keeping when you can buy them new still. :slap:

Rats! Does anyone know how much it would cost to pressure test and rebuild a used one?

Most radiator shops can pressure test them for about $30.00...as for rebuilding(cleaning) that may vary with what it needs

You dont want to have a radiator shop pressure test an evap unless its with around 250 psi or so of nitrogen. Radiator shops usually just use compressed air and thats not good enough. I should know I would use compressed air first for obvious leaks and then switch to nitrogen for smaller leaks. I leak checked my share of evaps while working at CAA. They really need to be flushed first to make sure that all the crap is out/

Does CAA sell rebuilt ones? How much do they charge to rebuild one?

Call them or check their website. They rebuilt a dryer for me. I think it was $40 plus shipping???

I really don't see the need to rebuild an evaporator. Just need to have it checked for leaks.

Their prices have gone up as of the middle of this year. Now to rebuld a drier is 68.50 if I remember correctly plus shipping. They usually recondition yours if it tests good. That use to be like 69 if I remember correctly. I cant remember how much for a new one was. But like I said, ford evaps are usually good. They will charge by their hourly rate if things need to get fixed like fittings. Like I said before, I did fair share of evap reconditions while I worfed there. I came away with a wealth of knowledge of classic automobile air conditioning systems and how to rebuild them.

I could have the one in my Mav pulled out. Or one of the guys on the board offered me one for $40 bucks plus shipping. I'll call the AC place next week and find out what's wrong with the one I have and if it can be fixed. If it's not worth fixing, I'll see about buying Tim's. It might need to be presure tested too.
