Hey Scooper, since your column is still mounted in the car, how much can be cut off the end of the column tube to make it flush with the firewall?

Furnace blower bearings are concentric, and have a locking collar, when tapped locks to the shaft, than has set screws to lock to the shaft.

Does this help? Tape measure is against the firewall.

Not sure if you would cut the outer part flush, or what.

    If so, right at 1"

good idea, cutting it flush with the firewall. I will see if I have enough shaft to do that.

Yea, looks like 1" would be the max. It is the outer I want to cut, Then the universal can be tight along the firewall plane. Thanks

Hey Scooper, I just received the CSA204-12 bearing. The outer diameter is 1 7/8". The ID of the end of the steering column is 2 1/8" My bearing sure dont look like yours.

On another note I ordered a 3/4 DD shaft from Summit along with a Flaming River universal. The DD shaft does not go into the universal. I measured the shaft with my calipers and it is right on the money at .750. On the other hand, the ID of the universal only measured .745. Does Flaming River do this on purpose so only their DD shafts fit their universal joints? And charge 3 times as much.

Actually blowing up your picture, it does look like yours only yours looks like it has a sleeve around it. Could you take a picture looking directly at the face of it?

That's weird, my Flaming River joints fit the 3/4 DD shaft. What's the part number?

    Pics...

    Various angles.

Note that from the front, it looks like it is eccentric, but I took the mikes to it and it is not. The outer surface of that inner ring was machined unevenly, and all other parts are concentric.

I am not sure if that was machined like that on purpose or not.

The shaft fits right into the center hole with no play.

Dennis, the U joint you have is for a factory GM double D shaft. Speedway Motors has a note about the GM DD shaft being smaller than the aftermarket shafts. I have been researching shafts, columns, and u joints for when I swap my Lincoln over to Saginaw power steering and a GM tilt column.

I bought the Flaming River universal which is 17mm on one end for the cavalier rack, and 3/4 on the other end. Had to do some light filing to get the 17mm end to fit. I bought a section of Allstar 3/4 DD from Summit and it does not go into the 3/4 inch end. Thats when I measured them and came up with those results. The universal does fit on the end of the factory DD shaft in the steering column. I also tried to slide the Allstar shaft into the CSA204-12 bearing I bought. It is extremely tight and would have to be installed with persuasion. Just wondering if other manufacturers of this 3/4 DD shaft is slightly under sized. Anybody have a way to accurately measure theirs?
