    Question:
I have a 1971 Maverick with a 200 six three on column and want to upgrade to a five lug set up, could i just replace the 3rd member / pig and axle shafts or do I need to replace complete housing as well and if so why?
    anyone?
    Please help, George

You need to replace the entire housing. 5-lug axles use the large bearings ... 4-lug uses the small bearings ... the housings are different for the different size bearings ...

can the granada 5 lug rear fit nice and easy into the 71 mav for a simple swap or is there more to it?

I have read on other posts that the Granada is direct bolt in. As far as simple,, dunno. I find that the only thing simple in life is getting myself into trouble lol.

i have a 73 maverick, and the engine winds real tight at 65 mph. here is my ?. since i can turn the rear wheel 1 full revolution and the driveshaft turns only one revolution, what is the gear ratio and what can i do to bring the engine rpms down so i can cruise up the i-state at 75 like i want to? what gears can i put in, or can i install an aftermarket o.d.???

    winds real tight?

    hey 73infla,

other than counting the teeth on your gears, the best way to know your rear ratio is to make a 'dot' on the tire and a 'dot' on the driveshaft (paint, chalk), and roll the car on the driveway one complete revolution of the tire. have a friend count the number of drivshaft revolutions at the same time. pain in the neck, but you should be able to get the ratio within about .20. for example: 3and1/4 driveshaft to one tire revolution=3.25 gears. ok?

That method has never worked for me...don't know why. I always count the teeth if there is no tag with the gear ratio stamped on it...

73infla, said his driveshaft turns (1) to (1) with his tire . would that be 1.00:1 gear ratio? if he could get the car rolling he would be doing..1000 rpm @100 mph  . just a guess, someone do the math...frank...

i understand the whole 1 to 1 ratio, but that still does not explain why the engine is screaming at 60mph, i need some one to break it down for me----i never have been any good with the ratio stuff all i know is when it breaks, i have to fix iti do not have a rpm gauge so i cannot tell what the rpms are i only know that the engine is revving way too high. thanks for the explanation
