You can cut the spring without removing it - but only if you cut exactly 1 coil off - or 2 but that is a pretty big drop. I removed the shock - and lowered the spring compresser through the top of the shock tower letting the top hooks grab the tower and the lower hooks grab the coil. Jack up the side you cutting and let the A-arm drop. Compress the spring until it lifts off of the pedestal on the A-Arm. Cut exactly one coil off - that way it still lines up with the pedestal - there is no way to turn a compressed spring. Then uncompress the spring and lower the car until the spring is back on the pedestal ... I found a Dremel with a cutting wheel the quickest way to go ... Dan
Actually, the easiest way would be to do it like the 65/66 Shelbys did. Relocate the upper control arm down one inch. I attempted this & found that the zert fittings would touch those always in the way Maverick shock towers. With slight modifications to the towers, it is possible to do. You'll get a lowered look & retain the quality ride while increasing handling capabilities by changing the roll center.
Yeah my friend and I where looking under there the other day and we were kind of bummed that they weren't as easy as our Mustangs were, but the Maverick has more support under the upper a-arm for sure. What did you have to do to get that upper arm lowered 1" down?
6 cyl springs Here is a good example of what one would look like with 6 cylinder springs up front and air shocks in back. This car originally came with a 6 cyl and I changed everything EXCEPT the front springs.
My two cents I used a set of front springs out of a 67 mustang that had a 351w and a c-4 , no air, no power steering. The mustang didn't sit really low it looked maybe slightly lower than factory. My maverick has a 302 , c-4 , no air, and no power steering, I took the front springs out of the mustang, cut a half a coil off and the mav. now sits just slightly lower than factory too. I also put 4 leaf springs in the back from J.C. Whitney , not sure I would do that again though the car looks like a 4x4 in the back. Oh yeah 351w came out of a e-150 van before it powered a mustang. Now it sits in my garage.
