thanks for continuing this SBF ID thread , it''s appreciated : for further data, disassembled engine - front acc , WP and chain case were blue rtv'd to prevent leaks from snapped retainer bolts/ Chain with plenty slack heads look really good as far as valves and rockers , no sludge at all in valley etc ... initial optimism with head off - no ridge, .030 Pistons faded to. uhhhohh = #4 has corrosion and few slight scrapes. expected to see piston ring or land damage but not evident now the assessment ... . . . . av e fun
Not to thread-jack; but what would have been used behind a 351M in the mid-'70s, a C-4 or a C-6? I always thought the '76 Cougar my parents owned had a C-6, but the information I've seen online shows only the 460 as having a C-6 in those big Fords & Mercurys...
351M used the 460 trans pattern, that leaves only C6 for those engines. C4/C5 never used that configuration(also C4 discontinued after '80). There are big block C4 bells but are race oriented. Pop's 351W '79 Cougar used the cast iron FMX. In the early '70s it was common to find a C4 behind 2bbl, 351C/W passenger cars. Cleveland was replaced by M in '75.
