Well, I fired it up today, man it revs like a beast! Unfortunately, my digital camera recently went AWOL, so no YouTube video. The EFI wiring is like basically identical to my 2.3. I test fitted the engine in my '73 also. It would actually be possible to install this engine with the shock towers in place. It fits between the stock shock towers with the factory manifolds removed. The exhaust ports come straight out horizontally on either side, and there is about an inch and a half of clearance between the exhaust ports and shock towers, which I don't think is enough for headers. You would need to do the Shelby drop and shave the shock towers in order to have enough room to build some decent headers. Down below, the steering center link is of course still in the way of the oil pan. I just left the engine sitting in the car and threw the hood back on it so it has a nice dry place to stay for now.
You do realize when you do the Shelby drop.....one is actually "raising" the mounting holes on the shock tower for the upper control arms. Is this what you meant to say? Would you be raising the mounting holes in order to get the nuts inside the engine compartment to be above the exhaust headers?
Craig, The Shelby drop lowers the mounting hole by one inch. That is why it is called the Shelby "drop". By lowering where the upper control arm mounts the front end geometry is made to add negative camber when the suspension is loaded and increase positive camber when it is unloaded. That keeps the tire tracking on its tread in hard turns.
Yea, I was completely bummed out I had to come home last night without any pics or video. Hopefully I can figure out what the heck I did with my digital camera before next weekend. I can't remember if it's somewhere around my house, or I left it somewhere in NC... In all actuality, I would say a Mustang II front end would be required to run this engine in a Maverick, not because of shock tower issues, but because of oil pan interference issues. It sure does look cool sitting in there though.
Jamie; what are your plans for the electric fan and shroud? If you plan to let it go, let me know. I'm looking for one. That SHO engine should be really unique in a Mav. Keep us posted on the progress!
