Not that I generally agree with the majority, I'd bet the mechanic is blowing smoke. If it ran OK for three days, my guess there is trash in tank that's getting into carb. Last year I rebuilt the carb I use on my 428, mfgr'd in 1967, runs perfectly. Always has for approx ten years, then needs freshening. . The new Holley on Comet developed a leak that showed up a year after I got it(was a free replacement for a carb that had casting problem). Anyway I had the thing apart four or five times till I got it fixed, found a internal passage plug that was improperly installed. That's something that's never supposed to need work. Of course when you have someone else performing the work, you are at their mercy.
I'm with Tom...cleaning the tank, lines and new filter should have been the first things the mechanic should have addressed before he even messed with the carb...JMO
Damn, I did replace the fuel filter when I first got the car, is cleaning the tank hard to do urself?
it's not that bad after the first time...are you pretty good wrenching? hardest part is getting the gas out to start with. that's why when I pull a tank for the first time I have a drain plug installed... it's an O2 sensor bung with an oil pan plug in it. to start with after draining the gas, take the filler neck out, you will have to remove it to pull the tank anyway. shine a light into the tank and see if there is anything in the bottom of the tank...rust, sludge for a few things that could be a problem. also take a mirror and inspect the sending unit to see if the sock is still attached to the tube. if you go there let us know what you find.
