help me if you can, my steering box went and i cant get anything without getting it off the internet and thats a little to much for me (like 400 instead of about 150 for in town here) so i was wondering if any other vehicles manual steering box is interchangeable with a 73 merc comet (and dont metion a maveric i cant get those either)
im sure someone here on the board could hook you up for alot cheaper then $400. i'd throw a post up in the parts wanted section good luck, wish i could be of more help
Mine went out once and I got a good one at a wreaking yard, @ 2 months later I thought it went out again but it was the rag joint slipping ,what a relief!
when mine broke I think 1 end of the wormgear broke, didn't take it apart but steering wheel had @ a full turn of slack in it
About 15 years ago I was driving my dad's '72 Dodge pickup with manual steering and the gear totally failed. Very fortunately I was creeping along in stop and go traffic...I had been on the freeway only minutes before. Basically I could take the steering wheel and go "bzzzzz" and it would spin freely around like a top. A friend was with me and and when I realized what happened I started rolling off the road (luckily the front wheels were turned that direction so I could get outta traffic)..he looks at me and says "what the hell are ya doing?"...then I showed him the wheel spinning and his mouth drops... To remain somewhat on topic...I don't have an extra gear myself...but have you tried rockauto.com? They usually have great prices...also, Granadas and Monarchs through about 1975 would probably use the same gear or a similar one; the steering system was pretty much the same as the Mav/Comet...
just a tip, if you cant find it here or the internet, alot of the newer junkyards can order it from another junkyard. If when you ask for a part they look it up on the computer, they can most likely run a locate on that part, you can also ask them for a print out of the interchange for that part. Most common program is called powerlink (hollander) then i remember another one called orion. gl
