Could you imagine if they took it past the prototype stage and produced it? A lot of us wouldn't be able to afford these cars!

Wife got me that book for Christmas. It doesn't go into much detail about the car, but does mention the BOSS302 Mav prototype, even has it on the inside back cover.

If one does not cut the shock towers, how well does a boss fit? It would be curious to see the list of mods on that prototype. I would guess the reason they didnt go there would be self explanatory at that point; also the un-safety of releasing a beast like that on the general public?

LOL, you'd have to rig motor mounts on the shock towers and stick transmission through the windshield. I suppose a periscope could be used for viewing objects to right.

How would that be any different than the monsters the big 3 were putting on the streets in the late 60’s early 70’s?

Guy's, for some reason I had BOSS 429 on my brain(yeah I'm a big block guy at heart).

A Boss 302 is a fairly easy fit.

Probably no different, but by the end of the 60s the big three were showing a certain squeamishness toward high HP machines IMO. Why put a tab limiting carb opening on a ram air 400? Why not advertise actual maximum HP ratings instead of fudging them? Were they not proud of them? Curb weight of a 71 Maverick is about 700 pounds less than a 71 Mustang. A boss Mav would have been an awesome car, but I think auto makers were just done with it. Seems like nowadays they are interested again tho.

I dunno if it was mfgr squeamishness, if the cars had been selling, Detroit would have built them.

I was there, was more like being bullied by insurance companies refusing to insure HP vehicles, plus tightening emissions regulations that at time could not be met with available technology. By 1971 performance vehicle sales were maybe 25% of what they were as late as 1969. They were down in 1970, off the cliff in '71. Most mfgr continued on with existing performance models through '73-'74. Chances a new performance model would be developed were nil. Enter the era of flashy graphics replacing real HP.

I remember going through emissions testing in 1978 and all my emissions equipment had to be on the car, or they would not even test it. I had to get a Nox device from the junkyard to make my 68 LeMans pass. I was so happy to not have air injection.

    Frank,
If you look up Mickey Thompson's "Challenger", you will see there is nothing Mopar about it ... ;)
That was a common name for many of his race cars, dating to the early 60s Bonneville Salt Flat cars. He also had some pretty innovative Mustang funny cars, the body split in the middle and the front was built into the chassis.

If it's a racecar, driver, builder, etc other than Richard Petty, Frank probably hasn't heard of it.
