Wasn't 75' also the year they dropped a lot of the options for the Maverick?

Didn't Ford drop the 'Grabber" and replace with "Stallion" for last few years to match 'Sprint' themed' Pinto and Mustang?. '76 Comet I had was a 200 cid - 'GT'- how does that fit this discussion?

    hav e fun

No liked the Mustang II and the Fox ones just weren't making it with gas mileage and amount of people you could carry. Along with the higher insurance rates. The fugly bumpers didn't do the Mav/Comet any good either. While the newer Stangs, Granada/Monarchs, then Fairmont/Zephyrs had them styled in.
Something Stangs owners don't like to deal with is, the 4 cyl turbo was a Fairmont/Zephyr 78 option before the 79 Fox Stangs got them.

I own a 67' and an 87' stang and we corrected the turbo folly with the SVO lol. Shame they weren't more popular. Doesn't take much to get those mid year 5.0's and later to really move. I put a V1 supercharger and cobra R intake on mine and that car lit up! Now I'm too far deep into it to ever sell it.

Grabbers '70-'75, Sprints '72 only, Stallion '76 only.. No "special" model for '77. No GT after '75.

The earlier equipment guides I've seen list 170 & three on tree as std drivetrain for all Comet(Grabbers did get 200 as std). The 170 was dropped for '73, that'd bump up 200 as base for the Merc..

To answer your question: Yes....I would just notch the stone guard.

As far as the bumper swap, do whatever you want and what makes YOU happy. But, be warned: There will be a fair amount of expense involved, and sourcing of parts that are not reproduced.

I have a better idea.....just drive the darn thing. :D

As always, Craig cuts straight to the point. I can make the bumpers a winter project.
