Next weekend I plan to remove the well worn C-4 out of my Maverick and replace it with a Top Loader 4 speed.
Here is my parts list, (these parts I already have for a previous project that never went anywhere):

Top Loader trans, Lakewood Bellhousing, Hurst Competition/Plus shifter and linkage.
To buy Mustang Steve cable conversion kit, 300 Flywheel, 302 clutch assy, and all necessary hardware, shifter boot.
Please fill in where I have missed anything.
    Thanks,
    Ken

And your toploader has the long input shaft for small blocks, correct?

Toby, the 300 flywheel is correct, it is a zero balance flywheel.

Mercgt73, what is the length of a input shaft I need? I know there is a longer pilot bearing suggested.
    Thanks for your help.

    Are you swapping into a 302 V8? Or a 300 I6? I think we both assumed a 302 V8...

    I'm sorry I wasn't clear. I am keeping my 250 I-6.

Gotcha! If the tag on your toploader says it came from a smallblock (200 up to 390?), then you should be good, unless someone changed the input shaft. I am not sure of the exact lengths of the small vs. big block input shafts. Here is a quick blurb I found about it: http://www.fordmuscleforums.com/all-ford-techboard/412018-toploader-input-shaft.html

They do talk about the extended pilot, which is an option. But from what I have read (no experience here, just here say), that the "right way" is to replace the input with the correct longer input.

I could be way wrong here, but I ran into this with my 390 tagged toploader and my 302. My input shaft was too short. Which I found out AFTER I drove the car for years.

    Thanks Rusty,
I just looked up the transmission on David Kee's site. My trans is a RUG-E which is a 1967 289 transmission wide ratio. The input shaft length, that goes into the pilot bearing, is 1.135 long.
After looking at NAPA's web site,I think I am going with a 1985 F-150 flywheel, 11" clutch, 88 Mustang Release fork. The Lakewood Bellhousing specifies changing the pilot bearing to Ford's C5TZ-7600-A. Tomorrow I'll be hitting the Ford dealer for that.

Ok, cool! Hopefully I did not introduce unnecessary doubt, just wanted to make sure you did not run into the same problem I did. Good luck with it! (y)

Thank you for all your help. The thickness of a 300 flywheel became a concern, I decided to buy a FMS 302 0 balance flywheel, ZOOM 10 1/2" mustang clutch assy and all the arp fasteners.
I really want this project to be finished on Monday the 4th.
I can't wait to start shifting again.
    Again Thanks,
    Ken

I'm putting a toploader into my Mav too. I wonder if you can tell me what Hurst shifter you are using (parts numbers for the shifter and the installation kit would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. John B

    Hi John,
I am using Hurst Competition/Plus Shifter P/N 391 3180 and Installation kit 373 5587. If you send me your email address, I'll send you a copy of the email's I got from a Maverick/Comet member that includes his input on putting a TopLoader in his Mav.
    Thanks,
    Ken

I may be off base here but are you using a Lakewood Scattershield designed for a cable clutch set-up?
