I was pulling the spindles off of a "74" mav and a "74" grabber, and went to switch them out and the passenger side has 4bolt holes while the other car has 3 bolts in the upper arm that keep the upper ball joint in. Was there a change, the grabber's build date is late 73 while the other is in 74, was there a change?
The old Mustangs and others used 4 bolts instead of 3. I believe they changed sometime in 70. I'll bet that upper a frame was changed out sometime in its life. Was both sides 4 bolts?
I have found that several early 70's and late 60's cars that share the simular front suspension as the mav use the 2 diffrent styles...My 70 Torino GT had 4 rivets/bolts on both sides...I swaped the upper a-arms to my Mav,which had 3 bolts...it is a diffrent yr/make piece. You might have a hard time when you go to change balljoints, but othere than that they are the same...
Do you have the part# for the original ball joints? The ones I get from the supply houses are smaller, have no provision for zerk fittings, and are 3 bolt. Any help would be appreciated. Earl
The ones I get are from Auto Zone (Mc/Norris) Forgot the #..But are for a 75 ford maverick with power steering...sometimes they ask sometimes they don't...I will check on the # and try to get it soon...
That is from memory so check it before you take them home. I replaced about a Gazillion of them back in the 70's when I was a front end mechanic for Goodyear so I'm pretty sure they're right.
