i got a 1972 250 i 6 maverick and i am looking to swap a 65 model year 289 in to it. what all is involved in the switch? i have read a few things on here but still kinda hazy as to what all is involved.
The 1965 289 came with a five bolt bellhousing and they are harder to find. You would be better off with a 1966 or later small block - the 302 is exactly the same on the outside and is a lot more plentiful. That 289 might be worth some money to someone restoring a 62 - 65 Ford car. Enough that it would buy you a 302....
The engine and trans are a match set. They are in a 1964 1/2 mustang I have right now also. The engine is actually a 6 bolt bellhouseing. i had to change bells when i got the engine. The whole reason i am keeping the 289 is because it is easily turned into a 302/331/347.
I've heard the 289 winds higher then the 302 plus it's old school and not every one is rich enough to have a built 302 some people have what they have layin around
