So that is actually a 3g alt. This should help you and you can ground it off any bolts on the case I believe.
Thanks appreciate it! I have a better understanding of how to hook it up with the diagram and I will upload a pic of my set up tomorrow before starting the car. Dumb question, after creating a ground through the alternator do I still need the other ground from before or can I eliminate the other ground cable?
It was previously mentioned by others that they ran their one wire alts without fuses, would I be able to run the 3g alt without a fuse in the meantime while mine comes in the mail?
What ground are you talking about? You will be able to remove your old external regular harness. You don’t need the fuse. It’s just a safety percaution but not necessary.
My battery ground is near my alternator so I got confused. My bad. I know that I should keep the battery ground though.
Does this set up look correct? Couldn’t lay it out in my car due to the weather. But this is my set up for tomorrow. I’m using these 4 gauge wires and running(maybe) a 175 mega fuse I got today. The cables I got don’t quite fit into the red housing from the alternator so I added two washers to allow contact? Does the fuse have to be grounded? I currently have it connecting two wires running to the solenoid. *excuse the crappy photos my phone camera is cracked **my battery cable wont be that long one I’m replacing it tomorrow. ***sorry for the loads of questions the auto parts store guys know nothing of what I’m talking about when referring to the maverick
Never ground a fuse on positive side of electrical system!!! The fuse goes in the positive "red" cable, between battery and positive side of the solenoid. You may have to split the cable and insert fuse.
If I’m not confident in my splicing skills could I run the fuse between two separate battery cables tied together with bolts and nuts and NOT ground it? Or would I be better off running no fuse until I got some help?
I will just a photo of my set up when I get home. But like previously stated NEVER ground the positive wire. Also mega fuses have a specific holder that they go into.
If ur going to install a fuse, and not confident in splicing maybe you should seek assistance. Like the above post by William 623 states, mega-fuse has specific way cables are connected.
my stock alternator... Ive replaced the alternator twice in 14 years, and the regulator twice, once on a trip. now, its starting to not kick in at low rpms, its probably the regulator, but I'm tired of low voltage at stoplights with the heater headlights and fog lights, and well ad a windshield wiper and im at 10.5.. on long trips to Vegas stuck in traffic in bad weather thats not good. I'm going to go with this Tuff Stuff 100 amp alternator I think it looks good, and made in USA. yes if it fails it may be harder to get from an auto zone, or maybe not. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/...ry/model/comet/year/1972/engine-size/3-3l-200 it is self exciting, so when it is spinning it puts out. So run one heavy + wire to the battery side of the starter solenoid or straight to Battery +, make sure it has good 12volt negative, and the original wiring can go and bite me..haha. maybe I'll leave it in place for that emergency on the road trips if I have to go back to the old style if I cannot get a one wire replacement on demand at a parts counter.
I was in a hurry so the pictures kinda suck. This is what the fuse holder looks like (this is for my electric fan) This is where you will plug your on key power line to. It’s part of the stock alternator harness
