i would just like to know what manual transmisisons will fit into a comet/mav beacuse if i'm going to put in a 351 w i sould just go ahead and put in the manual trany so what can i pull them out of and what will fit please can some one tell me
Corbin also the top loader has about three different placements for the shifter on the tail. Which one is a direct replacement for a mav. This one is a three sp. in the floor
If the question is which toploader has the absolute best location for the hole of the shifter? All ,will require some minimal trimming of the existing hole. Mine I had to trim so little nobody would ever know. Dennis Martin has a different toploader in his than mine. We will see how much he had to trim if any. Dan
5 speed tranny we took the 5 speed out of a 88 thunderbird turbo coupe and bolted it to the 302. trimming on the hump was minimal, had to do a little work on tranny mount but it works...Jim
I found my toploader at a swap meet with a bellhousing. It was a ford bellhousing and a late 60's fairlane(?) four speed. Either way, it bolted up, so there she sits. My C4 crossmember even worked (yeah, that was wierd). All I had to do was cut a hole in the floor. And then I self taught myself about the crazy z-bar invention and found all the parts. Hope this helps.
Thats one good thing about Fords. My Sprint went from a 200- 6 cyl w/ 3spd, to a 302 w/c4 (very temporarily), to a 302 w/T10 4 speed, and finally to a 302 w/ toploader 4 speed. They all bolted up to the stock locations and the original drive shaft fit all of them. Back in the day I took my 57 Fairlane 500 and went from a 292 auto to a 390 4 speed and it all bolted right in too.
Back in the day was that before or after you upgraded the wheels from square ones to round ones? har har... sorry, feeling rowdy... I fly the day after tomorrow.
The 65-73 Mustang is the easiest car to find 4 speeds in and they are very hard to find. Mostly you can find them at swap meets and on ebay from time to time. Unless your building serious hp, I'd consider the T5. Overdrive is real nice for the street. As far as I can remember, (and that aint saying much), no 70's truck came fro the factory with a toploader. Now, there is one that looks like a toploader, made in 77, that did come in trucks, but it is just a 3 speed with an overdrive. Here's a good page for toploader information: http://www.5speeds.com/toploader.html Here's one for T5's: http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2000/09/t5swap/index.shtml
