I finally solved the distributor riddle after many hours of scouring threads, messing with an ohm meter, wondering if it was my timing light, wondering if the 4 pin module wasnt playing nice, blah, blah, blah. Besides stalling when operating the vacuum advance with a hand held pump, it would subtract 8* of timing off idle and not give it back until 2000 rpms.
I tried reversing the 2 wires from the magnetic pick-up and it ran crappy, so I switched them back. Mr. Riggs at gofastforless (yes, I broke down and emailed him) told me to "switch the wires and adjust the timing." So I did, and now the hand held pump will not kill it via the vacuum pot, AND it quit subtracting 8*. My distributor has dark purple with a red stripe for all 3 wires, and since I was not plugging it in to an existing harness, I just grounded the ground and hooked the other 2 up.......and got it wrong I guess. Lol.....What a stupid long trail to wander just to figure this out. I can finally carry on with a re-curve and quit messing with it when that is done.

If there's a 50/50 chance wiring could be reversed, you can bet 99% it'll happen...

For my 60th birthday, my son urged me to take my car to the dragstrip, and he would pay my entry. So I went. 2nd time to go drag racing....so by no means do I know what I am doing, and I still do not have a posi. So, column shifted c4, no tach, and street tires my goal was to go 100 in the 1/4. This time slip had my best ET. I tried 8 times....lol. 99.95 was my best mph out of them all. The motor discussed in this thread is the one in the car.

stu, at least you beat the other guy!

No 60' time for him?

MUST BE MUFFLED 103Db @ Max Where did you run a hospital parking lot? LOL!

Improve your reaction time by leaving on the last yellow; don't wait for the green. Do a little dry hop to clean tires.

Really bad 60' time nothing to be ashamed of; that is where I started with the following combination:

351W with larger valve stock `69 heads, Reed Cam, Edelbrock Performer intake, Holley 4160/600 carb, BFG/TA Street tires and 2.79 open diff., 2500 stall convertor.

    Quickest time 14.92 @ 96.59 mph.

What rear gear are you running?

    Don't stop now, keep going.

Next fronter, 13 seconds, 100+ mph!

Just a little tweaking and practice.

Nothing at all there to be ashamed of. My first time was utter disappointment, I went with a 68 GTO and the belief that all muscle cars are fast. I was so deflated with my first pass at 15.15. Best pass that day was a. 14.93.

Agreed, a few more runs and you'll get the hang of it. I think ya dun good.

I never had a "quickish" ride till I built the T-Bird in '99. In it's prime it'd go low 13.3@104 and managed 13.11@105 on a 50* night. With blue bottle it went 12.23@112.(weight 3760 incl me). With fresh repack of it's traction lock and drag radials, she'd point her beak in the air and take flight.

Way to go stu on another day the car may have got to 100, drive around the water box so your tires dont get wet and just have fun when it comes to winning at drag racing speed has nothing to do with winning . Must have been at PIR ?

Stu what were your eighth mile times & MPH? I know had to be more than 15.9mph. No doubt your heads were making power.

I believe your eighth was somewhere close to to my Comet(never ran ¼) 9.27@77 comes to mind. Gotta dig up the slips.

Hospital? LOL ..... I had a 3.25 open diff...column shift c4. Out of 8 passes, I only went from 1st to third one time! Sometimes the car next to me was so loud, I couldnt hear mine, and without a tach I would just shift intuitively :rofl2:. Once I remember milking 1st pretty good, and second spun the tire almost the whole way to 3rd. My ETs ranged from 14.28 all the way up to 15.6 on the 1-3 shift bog blast. The left lane gave 60 ft times and the right lane gave 1/8th mile mph, but neither gave you both. It was very fun, and I need to go back with a posi.

    Yes you do Mister!!!!!!

PIR. I watched someone else drive around the water, and after I started doing that I went from 15s to 14s lol. It was very difficult to cut the light, try not to spin the tire too much, shift the column 1 gear at a time, and do it all exactly when it should be done.....I have respect for those who can do all this stuff with all the noise and sun in their eyes. Car did not overheat or skip a beat anywhere.....And I was flogging it hard.

Some of the slips have an 1/8 mph. one was 79 and one was 80. I need to pull those heads of and fiddle with them more. I picked up a valve seat grinding set and a valve refacing machine so I can cut 3 angle seats now and back cut the intake valves; both of which help flow at every lift point I use with a stock GT cam. I also have learned how to very slightly modify the short side radius to get stock heads very close to their max flow at .3 lift as long as the ports stay un-hogged. lol....I built my home-made flow bench AFTER those heads and have done a few more sets since, so they will come off at some point to get my latest technique applied. I got a set of e7te doorstops to play with, some 66 289 heads, and 69 302 heads. Ive spent probably 150-200 hours fiddling with this stuff and find it quite entertaining.

Thank you all for your encouragement. You all have been good to me for the last 6 years I been hanging around this place. I value the opinions in here and you should know what a great help you are.

HP is what produces MPH, your 79/80 mph is good. I still have a 3:00 gear but it does have a 2200 Hughes converter, could account for lower ET, are so many variables. I believe my runs were in D, let the trans decide when. Was how I ran Fairlane It went a screamin 10:42@66 mph in eighth. Other than headers, that's a 100% stock 1969 302.

I enjoy someone who likes to learn, you've been like a sponge.

BTW I've had some health issues, hopefully on the mend. If you still want that panel I still have it.
