One thing no one's covered is the bellhousing. Trucks always came with the bigger 164 tooth bell, which may give you clearance problems in a Mav. The 3+1 toploader everyone's giving advice on is easily Id'd by a bulge on the passenger side of the main case for the OD 4th gear. The tailhousing also has two horizontal (oval shaped)bolt bosses for the shifter to bolt up to. If it doesn't then grab it, as it'll be the older (better) 4 speed Toploader. Then there's also the all aluminum SROD 3+1 Toploader, which can also be used, but must use the matching bellhousing as it has a 1" longer input shaft. The SROD bell also works with the Tremec 5 speeds. One other thing about making your own pedals............ what ever steel you use, after it's bent, you'll also need to stiffen them afterwards, otherwise they're going to bend in service.
164 tooth flywheel bellhousing fits fine in a 71^ maverick ive got one in my car so i can run a 11" clutch
I have a t5 that needs a good home. I was told not to let it go for less than $400. Interesting to see the range of prices mentioned here.
T5 prices largely depend on the area, unfortunately in kentucky they don't seem to be so easy to get ahold of. Personally? 4 or 5 doens't matter to me, i'm not drag racing it, and not concerned about mileage, but rather the feel of knowing i can dump the clutch and break something, hopefully traction... rather than the feel of an automatic. She's not a daily driver and never will be again. So i'm pretty sure this 3+1 toploader swap will do everything i will use it for and then some. Did some reading and it seems they can be pretty stout as well, but geared super low... that doens't bother me in the slightest. If i came across a t5, i surely wouldn't pass it up.. but i'm having a hard time economically parting with the money for a t5, considering what they are going for around here, when the 4spd can be obtained largely, total swap for about 300 bucks, and some work
The problem with the 3+1 4 speeds is the spread in ratios between 1st and 2nd gear. 1st gear is something like 3 to 1, with 2nd at around 1.5 to 1.7. You'll see a big drop in rpms in going from 1st to 2nd. I've got one in my 89 Ranger and it's a big difference from what I had with the 2.78 (1st gear, wide ratio) 4 speed Toploader it replaced.
