I aggree with hawkco on the 390, my grandpa had a 390 special ordered for his torino wagon and from his stories i here every time i go over there it was very fast, he is the one i bought the maverick from.
how are you going to say that a 390 is a truck motor first off its almost the same motor as a 390 you can make a 428 out of a 390 if you can find a 390 with cylinders walls thick enough to bore .080 over and just drop in the crank and presto you have a 428.
To quote Emilio Estevez playing Billy the Kid in Young Guns II: "I don't think so Dave" . I had a big block 67 Stang and the 390 and later the 427 I had in it had the header bolts touching the shock towers. And they were mucho farther apart than the Comet/Mav towers. I'm 99% sure tower surgery would be a requirement to plant an FE in a Mav.
I've never done it myself D... I just know there were swap headers available. I guess they required a serious shaving. Maybe the FE sits high enough that the shave actually helps with headers. Neither of the 351s get header clearance from shaving due to short deck heights. I dug up a pic of the old Hooker version of the FE/Maverick swap header. The Hedmans looked almost identical from my recollection. They are 8 individual tubes.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see it done, I just don't think it'll work without a lot of tower work, i.e: the 427 T-Bolt Fairlanes comes to mind. On a side note, I got in 4 passes at the track today with the 77 Comet. Best was a 13.16 @ 106. Still some left on the table though. PM'd you on that.
There have been a couple FE Mavericks on eBay over the years. One this year, but the pics weren't clear on how the towers were modded. They were still there, but that is all you could tell.
I have recently expressed my interest in swapping my 250 inline for a 302 and doing some work on it..but i've came up short on money....is there anyway to beef up my 250 inline???
Man,i'd love to get my hands on a set of those(lol didnt quite sound right) Then i could put the 406 tri power motor and ported 428 cj heads togather and put it in the mav!
This is a 70 model with a 427... Looks like a pretty severe shave. Almost like they would have to go back with smaller diameter springs. Edit: This one is equipped with 2.125" Hooker swap headers...
