I have torn down 2 Windsors from the 90s. They were both zero deck. The one I am using, so far I have plasti-gauged the original main bearings (which had very little wear) and they were all between .0013-.0017. Crank looked spotless. A mass produced factory engine with stunning tolerances. I cant say the same for the first 3 decades, but I am REALLY liking what I see in the 4th decade. Those 400 dollar Explorer 302s in u-pull-it are golden.

CNC machining helps a lot on the quality after around 1985 (IMO) 71+ QC was in the toilet. 75K out of a 60s 70s engine was about smoker time. 95+ 200K is the norm.

Heads are almost ready for final assembly. They will go back to the machine shop to get .050 milled off the bottom to yield 10.5:1 compression ratio. Then final cleaning and assembly. The Chinese boss "3V" intake had some port misalignment, but that is fixed. I did a very slight (about .050) cylinder chamfer on the block next to the intake purely for air flow reasons as the chamber was bigger than the bore at that spot. There is way more fiddling involved with this than I could have imagined, but it is still moving forward.

I would only go .030". Otherwise, intake alignment getting funky.

The Chinese boss intake already required two ports to be moved forward some, and all of them to be raised .100 to not have a "step." I have done all the aligning with no head gaskets to simulate a .040 mill job, but I think I will check it once more with intake gaskets in place to see how my marks line up. Measure twice.....and again....cut once?
