Welcome to the board. I've never seen one either. If you find out let me know to. That one would be worth some money.
Welcome to the board Maverod. Do you still live in NC? I like the others have never seen a hatchback version. I take it it was open all the way into the trunk, carpeted? Was there more glass and less trunk like a Pinto or did the glass stop at the trunk lid. They made Pontiacs with hatchback, Olds too maybe that had a hatchback but looked like a Nova in the mid 70's. Not all Pintos were hatchbacks. We had a '72 hatchback and a '79 that was a trunk car. Seth
Ford never built a hatchback Maverick. I suppose someone could have customized one into a hatchback. I have seen a 69 Mustang Sportsroof made into a hatchback.
I would venture to say someone did a very nice custom job. I'd love to know differently if you find out, MavRod. BTW, we really are nice guys on here and dont' mean to pile-on.
odd things did happen They made some prototypes on some cars that sometimes ended up in connected ford employees garages too. They had weird door tag DSO's that were internal ford numbers. Not saying it happened, just throwing out a possibility. I'd actually vote for the home mod.
I just heard of another being spotted in my area, by a freind. Another Mav. fan. If I catch this thing I'm taking lots of pictures. I may offer to buy it!
Be sure and post the pictures when you get them. I saw a 72 green Pinto that looked like a Maverick from the back because of the tail lights and the small bumper.
There was one weekend that I was at the Rockingham Drag strip and I caught the side rear quarter as it was going by.And I told my wife and kids that it looked like a Maverick going there. I walked out to look and saw that it was a Vega. From the side glass quarter looking towards the back does look like a Maverick or Comet. There is a resemblance there. You can put all the money you want in a Chevy. But it will NEVER kick a FORDS A$$!!!!!!
Darn it now I know this thing exists. I walked up to it looked it over personally. It had the partial vinyl roof and same body lines as every other Maverick, but a hatchback. I even remember the bit of rust at the top of the hatch.
