Shelby de Mexico production continued through 1972 with the building of approximately 200 Mustang "GT351" models and approximately 300 Shelby Mavericks. Both models carried Shelby emblems, Shelby aftermarket wheels and Shelby aluminum engine pieces. Both had rear window louvers, and front and rear spoilers. Additionally, the Maverick had a hood-mounted tachometer and a Boss 429-style hood scoop. No Shelby de Mexico cars were ever brought into the United States until 1986. Surely with 300 made and it being a shelby someone has to still have one.
WOO-HOO!!! I Did it!!!....I found one!!!.... I own a Shelby Maverick!!! Ok, I'll admit, it's in pretty bad shape, most of the Shelby stuff has been pulled, but it doesn't matter... It's a Shelby Maverick!! What?? Can I prove it's a Shelby?? Well, uhh, .....no Shelby De Mexico didn't document or assign any special designation or ID or even document the VINs of the Shelby conversions.....so, of course, I can't "prove" it's a Shelby............. >and you can't prove it's NOT a Shelby Maverick Get it now?? AS I've said before....even if they exist.....they don't exist. Even if you find one of the 300....there's no way you'll even know for sure, no way you can prove it....to yourself or anyone else. If it's a clone....there's no way someone can prove to you it is a Shelby.....and no way to prove it's NOT. As much as I too would like to see someone find and share a Shelby Maverick with the world......it's not going to happen. The Shelby Maverick is a lost cause,...an unobtainable dream......gone
You'd think there would be records of the cars that this Mr. Velazquez imported into Mexico. He had to get them somewhere. It's not like he just went to a corner car lot and bought 300 Mavericks one day. Did he buy them from a Ford DSO or get them directly from a factory?
Sad, but true...but then again, if they do exist, I would be willing to bet there WAS some id and documentation on them. Just because no one has seen the car or documentation, doesn't mean either did not exist. Who knows, maybe one day we're gonna have a newbie on here telling us all about his 5K mile Shelby Maverick he's had since day one (which we no doubt will not believe) and then he's gonna tell us he's 60 years old and was working for Shelby De Mexico at the time and was a Ford Exec. He's also got records on all 300 that were built and tons of photos. Hmmmmm. Hey, I just read the other day where this lady won the same million dollar lottery twice. Anything could happen!!!
Sorry about changing my post.....but I thought I'd try to make my point differently. (thanks for quoting the original Rayzor) Unfortunately, documents can be forged too....that would be a bit extreme, yes,....but if someone thought there might be a big Shelby payoff in it, they'd probably do it,.....but from everything I've read and seen.....I don't think there was any documentation with "Shelby" and a VIN on the same document. Besides, it's been 34 years, and Shelbys have been worshipped and sought after nearly from day 1.....I think if someone had an original with documentation.....it would have been found by now. again.....dream about the unreachable dream....but better yet,....Build your own Shelby Maverick....the way Shelby himself would have really done it if he had actually been in anyway involved with the "originals" in anything but name only. Because face it people.....you know the man....you know his cars...and we all KNOW he would have built a WAY better car than El-Not-Really-Shelby De Mexico!
It's the history that's special. It went like this: My wife's mother's sister knew Eduardo Velazquez. Her daughter knew the Velazquez family and went to college with and dated Little Eddy, the son of Eduardo Velazquez. According to her, Little Eddy said Shelby de Mexico was a small automobile Dealership just north of Ajijic. This dealership was owned by Carlos Ricardo Shelby. Well, the story goes that Carlos was an ex driver of The Green Angels. Tired of the long hours on the road he bought a Ford Dealership. Evidently he snagged up a bunch of Mavericks and Comets while driving his green truck along the highways in Mexico. He then built the Shelby Mavericks because he couldn't get Ford to ship any real Shelby's to Mexico despite being a step brother to Carroll who refused to acknowledge their relation. Evidently Carroll's father made a trip to Guadalajara in his early twenties while on leave from the Army. The project ultimately failed after the first car was built due to 72 kilos of an un-named substance found while taking the car to a show in San Antonio. Carlos had to sell his dealership to pay lawyer fees. The car was turned into a police pursuit vehicle with D.A.R.E. written across the back spoiler. The car disappeared one day after it was sent in for a tune up. No one has seen it since.
